Departure and arrival points

In Amalfi, the hydrofoil departs from the tourist port, which is located very close to the historic center and the famous Piazza Duomo. In Capri, the landing takes place at the Port of Marina Grande, which is the island’s main port. After you disembark on Capri you can continue your journey by taking the funicular, taxi or bus up to the Piazzetta in the center of Capri or take a trip to Anacapri by taxi or bus.

Port of Amalfi

The Port of Amalfi is the Amalfi Coast’s main port. Unlike the single small pier in Positano that’s very exposed to the elements, the Port of Amalfi is well-sheltered and allows for regular runs even in moderately rough sea conditions. There are ferries and hydrofoils from Amalfi to Capri, Positano, Sorrento, Naples and Salerno.

The Port of Amalfi is on two levels:

  • Arriving ferries disembark on the lower level, and passengers can easily walk to the city center after disembarking.

  • Departures take place on the upper level.

Ticket offices are located at the end of the pier. The harbor area is very scenic but there aren’t any shaded areas and it doesn’t have many benches for waiting. Just behind the port is the very centrally located Piazza Flavio Gioia, where you can find taxis, cars for hire with private drivers, and public buses. Given how close the port is to the city center, you don’t have to arrive too early. Once you have your ferry tickets, you can arrive around 15 minutes before departure time.

How to get to the Port of Amalfi

The port is located in the city center and is a close walk from the main attractions. There are various transport options for reaching the port.

  • By bus: the Sita bus stop is in Piazza Flavio Gioia, right in front of the port. There are direct buses from Sorrento (with stops in Positano, Praiano, Furore, and Conca dei Marini) and from Salerno (with stops in Vietri sul Mare, Cetara, Maiori, and Minori). There are also buses that travel to the upper part of the coast, to towns such as Agerola, Ravello, and Tramonti.

  • Taxis, shuttle buses and private cars with drivers also stop in Piazza Flavio Gioia

  • By car: you can park at the Darsena parking lot, which is the closest to the port but also the smallest. Another option is the Berma parking lot or the Luna Rossa parking lot. Parking lots in Amalfi tend to fill up easily during the day, so it’s best to arrive early in the morning. You can’t book parking in advance. However, you can check parking availability in real time at the website https://sistema-amalfi.it/

Ferry companies

Several ferry companies operate at the Port of Amalfi:

  • Alicost

  • Alilauro

  • Cooperativa Sant’Andrea

  • NLG (Navigazione Libera del Golfo)

  • Lucibello (Positano Jet)

Several companies also offer combined tickets for visiting multiple locations on the Amalfi Coast and Capri in a single day.

Practical tips

  • Book in advance: It’s important to buy tickets online, especially in high season. Make sure you always have a return ticket in advance as well.

  • Arrive early: Be at the port at least 15-20 minutes before departure to allow plenty of time for boarding procedures and ensure you don’t miss your boat.

  • Luggage: If you’re traveling with heavy or bulky luggage, there’s a porter service available at the Port of Amalfi.

  • Weather conditions: Always check the weather before departure. Tickets are refundable in the event that your crossing is canceled due to rough seas.

Services on board

Hydrofoils offer comfortable indoor seating and restrooms. Some vessels also have an outdoor area to admire the view and/or a small bar for snacks and drinks.

Recommended times to travel

The best time to travel by ferry from Amalfi to Capri is between May and September, when the sea is generally calm and trips are more frequent. In the winter months, direct crossings may be reduced or suspended. In the region of Campania, the climate is never excessively cold, but winds in the Gulf of Naples can be very strong and make sea crossings problematic.

Luggage

On ferries between Amalfi and Capri, one carry-on is included in the ticket price, while you’ll have to pay a small supplemental charge for large bags. If you need help transporting your bags, a porter service is available at the Port of Amalfi. This service is particularly useful for those staying in the upper part of town and in pedestrian-only areas.

Children

Children up to 12 years old are entitled to reduced-price tickets but the prices vary between the different ferry companies.

Pets

Pets are generally allowed aboard ferries if you make a reservation for them and pay a small supplemental charge. They must have valid up-to-date health documents and, in the case of dogs, travel with a leash and muzzle. Some ferry companies provide special areas for animals, which makes the journey more comfortable for them and for other passengers.

Boat tours from Amalfi to Capri

Ferries aren’t the only option for traveling to Capri from Amalfi. If you’re looking for an alternative to the public ferries you can book a private or group tour to get to Capri.

  • Private boat with skipper: Renting a private boat is the perfect choice if you want an exclusive, intimate, and customized experience. This option allows you to decide for yourself when you want to depart and return, giving you total flexibility and freedom over your schedule. During the tour you can stop for a swim in the Mediterranean to explore hidden sea coves along the Amalfi Coast. You can even include visits to the most famous sea caves of Capri, such as the Blue Grotto, the Green Grotto, and the White Grotto, and admire the famous Faraglioni rock formations up close.

  • Boats available: The boats you can choose from for private tours vary in size and comfort. The available vessels include small traditional boats to luxury yachts, with amenities on board such as soft drinks, towels, snorkeling equipment, and comfortable spaces for relaxing. This option is perfect for couples looking for romance, families who want to have an unforgettable adventure, or groups of friends who want to share a unique experience. The base price for a private tour starts at around 800 euros for a medium-sized boat with a skipper, and can vary based on the type of boat and the services requested.

  • Group tours: Group tours are an economical and well-organized option for visiting Capri. Group tours usually depart from the Port of Amalfi in the morning. During the tour you’ll enjoy scenic views of the Amalfi Coast along with brief stops for taking photos. Once you arrive at the island of Capri, the tour includes a cruise around the island to see iconic sights such as the Faraglioni rock formations, sea caves, and other points of interest off the island’s coastline. Afterwards, the boat docks on the island so you can have free time to explore on foot, visiting the famous Piazzetta, the Gardens of Augustus, or Anacapri.

  • Group tours are ideal for if you want a more structured experience with a pre-established itinerary so you don’t have to plan any logistics. Pricing starts at around 150 euros per person.

What to do when you arrive in Capri

  • take a boat tour to visit the famous Blue Grotto or the Faraglioni.
