Capri Boat Rentals

Rent a boat on Capri to enjoy a few hours, a half day, or a full day on the Italian Mediterranean. Either way, your time skirting the dramatic coastline will be the experience of a lifetime as you take in sea caves like the famous Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), White Grotto, and Green Grotto; swim or snorkel in the crystal-clear waters; and cruise beneath the Faraglioni Rocks and Punta Carena lighthouse. On this page you can browse the available rental boats on Capri with a skipper.

Options for Capri sea excursions

On Capri you can depart from Marina Grande (the island's commercial and tourist port, where hydrofoils and ferries depart and arrive) or from Marina Piccola (on the southern side of the island). If you want to rent a boat to pilot yourself, we suggest you leave from Marina Piccola because it's a lot calmer.

Tour of the island of Capri

3-4 hours

Faraglioni, Grotta Azzurra, Marina Piccola, Grotta Verde, Grotta Bianca

A tour of Capri by boat without stops takes an hour and a half. If you also want to visit the Blue Grotto, you need to calculate at least three hours. Four hours is the ideal length of time because it allows for stops for swimming.

For this excursion and all excursions that head towards the mainland you'll need to charter a boat with a skipper.

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

I have never driven a boat. Can I rent one?

Yes, as there are small boats and dinghies which can be rented without a skipper even if you don't have a boating license. We recommend a minimum amount of boating experience to rent a boat independently, however.

Where can I rent a boat on Capri?

Most boat rental and charter companies on Capri are located in Marina Grande, the island's port and marina. This is where most private boat tours will depart from and where you can hire a dinghy or boat without a skipper. There is only one boat rental company based in Marina Piccola, on the southern coast of the island.

What types of boats can I rent?

Based on your budget and the size of your group, you can rent a number of different types of boat, including rubber dinghies, wooden gozzo or lancia boats, speedboats, and yachts. Private boat tours of the island are usually aboard Capri's traditional gozzo or lancia boats, but we recommend a larger speedboat or yacht for a transfer or tour of the Amalfi Coast or Bay of Naples. Here you can find a complete guide to renting a boat on Capri

How many hours should I rent a boat?

You can sail around the entire island of Capri (without stopping) in an hour, but most boat companies offer tours of 2 or 4 hours or for the full day.
A two-hour tour is perfect for those visiting the island for one day who also want to see the island by land. A full-day tour is best for those who want to stop for lunch at a waterfront restaurant or take time to swim, but can be tiring for those who are not used to being out on the water. The ideal tour is a four hour trip, which includes enough time to sail around the island, visit the sea caves, and stop for a swim.

Do I need a boating license to rent a boat on Capri without a skipper?

There are small boats and dinghies which can be rented even if you don't have a boating license. We recommend a minimum amount of boating experience to rent a boat independently, however.

How long does it take to cruise around the island?

It takes about 90 minutes to cruise around the entire island of Capri on board a smaller craft. If you want to take in the island, stop for free time to swim and snorkel in the most beautiful coves, snap a few photos under the Faraglioni, and visit the Blue Grotto, consider that it will take about three to four hours with a small-group tour or private boat tour of Capri.

To really unwind and explore the island's coastline at your own pace, consider a full-day tour of the island that often includes time on land to stroll through the Piazzetta in Capri and the quiet center of Anacapri. If you just have an hour or two, opt for a quick sunset boat trip to the Faraglioni that includes a Prosecco or Limoncello toast on board.

What types of boats can I book for a tour or rental on Capri?

The most common type of boat you’ll find on Capri is the traditional wooden “gozzo caprese”, often built by the Fratelli Aprea company. There are gozzo boats in a number of sizes, from those small enough that you can rent one without a boating license to large, luxurious versions that are similar to small yachts. You can also find rubber dinghies, speedboats like the Itama 38 or 40, as well as luxury boats and yachts like the Pershing.

Which port do boat tours depart from?

Boat tours of Capri depart from ports in Sorrento, Naples, Massa Lubrense, Positano, and Amalfi. There are also departures from other towns along the Amalfi Coast. And, of course, you can depart from the port on Capri itself, located in Marina Grande...the same port where ferries to and from the mainland dock.
