Boasting an incredibly panoramic position on the north-eastern slopes of Anacapri, Villa San Michele was built by the Swedish physician and author, Axel Munthe, towards the end of the 19th century. The site, some 300 meters above sea level, was previously occupied by an ancient Roman villa, the remains of which can still be seen in the gardens.

Munthe constructed Villa San Michele so as to house his impressive collection of classical Roman, Etruscan and Egyptian artefacts, including a head of the Medusa, a marble bust of Emperor Tiberius, and an Egyptian sphinx.

The gardens of the villa, home to a great variety of Mediterranean plants and a charming little mediaeval chapel, which Munthe restored himself, are as beautiful as any of the exhibits inside the museum. From here, a magnificent view of the Bay of Naples can be seen.

This is absolutely amazing and the only reason I didn’t rate it 5 is I was upset with the guy that we spoke to. We asked him if we could see everything in the 40 min that was left before closing and he said yes. There was a museum before you enter the garden.I believe it takes quite a bit longer than that especially if you like gardens. I felt I had to rush through to see it. I highly recommend that if you love gardens and museums do not go 30 min before it closes. Take at least an hour or more to relax and enjoy . I did express to him that I was disappointed but he didn’t seem to care as he received our money . I was dissatisfied with his attitude but the place was amazing.

Beautiful villa with fantastic park and sea view. In contrast to Villa Lysis, the rooms of Villa SAn Michele are furnished and interesting to visit. The villa can be reached on a short, easy walk from the center of Anacapri.
